The term "special release" encompasses a few different types of pets. The common theme between all of them is that they employ an unusual release method, and tend to be quite unlikely for the average user to receive for free from their regular participation in the site activities. This leads to a tendency for special release pets to be quite valuable.
Unreleased pets
Most pets are made available for a limited time, where users can adopt a random selection of a litter or outcomes. However, there are a few pets which are very special, and never get this normal release. Rather, they are created by random chance during other events. The typical unreleased (often called UR) pet is one which can only be obtained by very slight random chance by adopting from the advent calendar on December 18th. At no other time do these pets become available, which means they tend to be quite rare.
How to Get a UR Pet
The only time you can adopt an "Unreleased/UR" pet is on the 18th of December. There is a random chance that you might get one of these pets, out of several other hundred pets being released from the same box, and you are only allowed to adopt three pets from the box. This makes the UR pets quite valuable.
UR Release Dates
December 18th has been an important event on Chicken Smoothie for a long time. Due to their unique method of release, the unreleased pets have only been available on these dates (assuming they had been created at that point in time).

The Malk dog came from a separate box originally, but was still released via the unreleased mechanic, just among a collection of Malk Pets. Future years the dog came from the regular box with all the other pets.

The Zebras
Zebras have a very special history on the site. In 2009 and 2010, there was a small chance that a user may receive a zebra in place of one of their regular horse or pony adopts, when users went to claim their free monthly adoptables. After the site's first horse artist, equimagine, retired at the end of 2010 the zebra releases were also brought to an end about a year later. That was until 2014, when the line art of these pets was redone by a new artist, and zebras returned to their unusual release pattern.

Malk Dragons
While Malk was an official artist on the site, their adoptables came from their own box on the adoption page. Similar to the zebras' rare appearances in the equine adopts, Malk created a few different dragons that would become available in her own monthly pets. Each color was available only briefly, and by random chance, before a new color would take its place in the algorithm. By the end of 2010 Malk stepped back a bit from their position, and the dragons were retired along with the consistency of Malk pet releases.
Although the dragons are now officially retired, they are still available by random chance on December 18th, in the regular rerelease box like any other pet from the past.
